Meeting and Auction June 20 in Davidsonville!

COVID regulations are considerably loosened in Maryland and Anne Arundel County, so we are planning to meet at our regular site in Davidsonville. (See directions at We will adhere to and enforce all regulations in place at the time. PLEASE WEAR A MASK INSIDE THE BUILDING. The MAARC Board of Directors voted to ask all attendees to wear a mask inside.

Normally, we have our big annual RadioActivity in June, but not this year. We had to cancel it long ago because of uncertainty about COVID regulations. We'll be on next year, though, bigger and better than ever June 3-5, 2022.

We will have a swap meet in the parking lot, starting at 10:30 am.

To celebrate coming back to Davidsonville we will have TWO, yes TWO, auctions— one outside and one inside. We will have a normal auction inside Ford Hall to sell the remainder of the Howard Felder collection. When we stopped having auctions because of COVID, we rented storage space for the collection and we need to end that expense. So we are now holding this auction for the 150+ remaining items. There are many nice, easily restorable table radios, some ham equipment, and various other stuff. To speed up the process, we will put many of the lesser-value items on a special sale table before the auction.

We will also have a "walk-around" auction before the meeting outside in the parking lot of items brought for tailgating. The auctioneer and a gaggle of possible buyers will go to each vendor's display. The vendor can choose to auction any items right then and there. Terms are cash to the vendor, on the spot. Note that MAARC will not handle money for the walk-around auction; buyer pays the vendor immediately.

These auctions will not be open for Zoom bidding. Maybe next time. For these auctions, you must be present to bid.

Schedule for June 20 meeting:

Tailgating swap meet        10:30

Walk-around auction         12:00

Meeting                               1:00

Auction inside                      2:00

Program: Robert Lozier on Radio Batteries

Robert Lozier's topic will be "Radio Battery History Before the Transistor Era." Robert says, "Inventing light speed methods of communication without battery technology is like trying to make a pizza without flour. This presentation will illustrate the time-line of the most notable forms of batteries eventually to make possible the build-out of various wire and radio related systems. The disposable nature of most batteries has resulted in the almost complete lack of interest in preserving the few surviving vintage examples of this absolutely essential technology—a history that is well worth remembering." The presentation at the meeting will start at 1:00 pm Sunday, June 20, on Zoom.
