Informal Assessment of Vintage Radios
We are trying something new as part of our RadioActivity 2025 event scheduled for June 19th through the 21st at the Byzantium located at 2747 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD. We are inviting guests to bring in their vintage electronics for an informal assessment. Focused on the assessment of vintage radios, here are the details:
Owners of vintage radios can bring them for a free informal assessment of the radio’s value, safety, and playability by MAARC members of the at the annual RadioActivity event at the Byzantium Center in Annapolis June 19 and 20. This service will be available to the public for no charge.
The informal assessment will include examining both the cabinet and the electronics. The MAARC examiners will examine the cabinet for veneer problems, cracks and breaks, water damage, and other considerations that could affect the radio’s value. Electronically, the power cord, and presence of vacuum tubes or transistors will be assessed. If deemed safe, the examiners will slowly bring the radio up to power to see if it plays.
Based on these examinations, recommendations will be made as to electronics repairs and cabinet refinishing, if needed. Please note that these will be preliminary estimates; the possible total extent and cost of repairs cannot be determined with these brief assessments.
The examiners will also give informal valuations of the radio based on the most recently published price guidelines and the reviewers’ knowledge of current price trends.
Owners may consign to the Club’s auction on Saturday, June 21st, at Byzantium. (Fifteen percent seller’s commission will be deducted from the final sale price). The public is also welcome to attend the auction to buy radios.
